چکیده

This paper studies how land reform and population growth affect land inequality, incorporating indirect effects owing to their influence on household divisions and land market transactions. An intra-household model of joint production explains how divisions and land transactions emerge to avoid inefficient free-riding, and how they are affected by land reform and growth in household size. These predictions are successfully tested using household panel data from West Bengal spanning 1967-2004. Land reforms reduced inequality, but their effect was quantitatively dominated by inequality-raising effects of population growth. JEL Classification Nos: J12, O13, O13

Role of Land Reform

This paper uses data from a household survey to estimate changes in land distribution in rural West Bengal between 1967-2004 and decompose these into contributions of different factors. There was a substantial drop in land per household and land per capita, while within-village inequality rose. The latter was associated mainly with rising landlessness induced by high rates of household division...

Land use changes detection and spatial distribution using digital and satellite data, case study: Farim drainage basin, Northern of Iran

Land use change may influence many natural phenomena and ecological processes, including runoff, soil erosion, sedimentation and soil conditions. Decreasing of forest area in the North of Iran is one of the critical problems in recent years. The aims of this study are to detect land use changes between 1967 to 2002 using satellite images of Land Sat 7 ETM+ (2002), aerial photos and digital topo...

Long-term Effects of Land Reform on Human Capital Accumulation Evidence from West Bengal

We use data on inter-generational gains in educational attainment by some 500,000 individuals in 200 West Bengal villages to explore gender-differentiated impacts of land reform on human capital accumulation at the individual level. While there are significant gains (of about 0.3 years for males) in the immediate post-reform generation, their magnitude pales in comparison to second-generation e...

IDEOLOGY VS. COMPETITION IN REDISTRIBUTIVE POLITICS: An Analysis of Land Reforms in West Bengal1

We investigate the roles of political ideology and electoral competition as determinants of land reform implementation in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal. Using a twenty five year panel dataset for a sample of 89 villages, we find evidence against the hypothesis that political ideology alone matters, and find evidence supporting the role of electoral competition. However, the pure Downs...

Land use and land cover spatiotemporal dynamic pattern and predicting changes using integrated CA-Markov model

Analyzing the process of land use and cover changes during long periods of time and predicting the future changes is highly important and useful for the land use managers. In this study, the land use maps in the Ardabil plain in north-west part of Iran for four periods (1989, 1998, 2009 and 2013) are extracted and analyzed through remote sensing technique, using the land-sat satellite images. T...
